This years' presidential election has been described as one of the wackiest, outrageous and volatile elections in US history. Our 3 esteemed political scientists will discuss the issues that have shaped this years' election, what sets this race apart from other elections, and where we are headed as a country.

Join us for a considered and engaging town-hall style discussion, where the audience can have their election questions answered.

Following the panel, join us for a little soirée with canapés, cocktails and a chance to mingle with fellow UC alumni!

About our speakers

Dr. Jennifer vanHeerde-Hudson is a Senior Lecturer in Political Behaviour within the faculty of politics at University College London. She initially completed her BA in Political Science at the University of California Los Angeles, before doing her MA and Ph.D. at the University of California Riverside again in Political Science. Jennifer graduated from UC Riverside in 2003. Dr vanHeerde Hudson's research interests lie in the role of public knowledge, attitudes and opinions on policy outcomes and institutional arrangements. With a particular focus on UK and US elections, a second line of research for Dr vanHeerde Hudson has been examining aspects of campaigns and elections such as spending and negative advertising.

Dr. Sandra Halperin completed her Postgraduate Degrees in Political Science (MA and Ph.D.) at the University of California Los Angeles, class of 1991. She was previously a Senior Lecturer at the University of Sussex, and is now Professor of International Relations and Head of the Department of Politics and International Relations at Royal Holloway, University London, where she also serves as Director of the Centre of Islamic and West Asian Studies. Professor Halperin's main research interests include global development, the historical sociology of global relations, the causes and conditions of war and peace, and Middle East politics.

Dr. Shaina Western is a Department Lecturer in International Relations at The University of Oxford. She received her Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of California Davis in 2015 and conducts research on international cooperation and migration. She is currently working on a project to understand the bargaining process and ratification outcomes of international treaties.

Dr. Calum MacDonald served as a Labour Member of Parliament representing the Western Scottish Isles from 1987 to 2005. He is a Wind Farm Entrepreneur and Director of Point and Sandwick Power, Europe's largest community run windfarm. He holds a Ph.D. in Political Philosophy from the University of California Los Angeles (1992).

Mr. Albert Scardino is a journalist, commentator and critic on US affairs and a documentary film maker. He served as a correspondent at The New York Times, as press secretary to the Mayor of New York and as an executive editor at The Guardian. He received a Pulitzer Prize for his work at his own newspaper, The Georgia Gazette. He graduated from UC Berkeley in 1976 with a Master's Degree in Journalism.
